Level 5 Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling

Develop the knowledge, skills, and self-awareness.

Becoming a reflective and ethical psychodynamic counsellor.

Our Level 5 Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling is a comprehensive two-year professional training programme designed for students who have completed a Level 3 counselling qualification and are ready to begin training as practising counsellors.

At Aphrodite School of Counselling and Psychotherapy, we believe that becoming a therapist is about far more than learning theory. It is a process of personal and professional development, requiring curiosity, commitment, and the willingness to understand yourself as deeply as you seek to understand others. Throughout the course, you will be supported by experienced practising psychodynamic therapists in a warm, challenging, and nurturing learning environment.

What You Will Learn

The course combines psychodynamic theory, counselling skills, personal development and supervised clinical practice. Areas of study include:

  • Psychodynamic theory and clinical concepts

  • Attachment and child development

  • Unconscious processes and defence mechanisms

  • Transference and countertransference

  • Assessment and contracting

  • Ethics and professional practice

  • Diversity, inclusion and anti-discriminatory practice

  • Working safely with clients

  • Developing reflective practice and professional identity

Students are encouraged to integrate theory with practice through experiential learning, discussion, written assignments and supervised client work.

Personal Therapy

An essential part of psychodynamic training is developing a deep understanding of yourself.

Students are therefore required to commit to weekly personal therapy once they begin the course. This forms an important part of your development as a therapist and supports safe, ethical and effective clinical practice.

Assessment

To successfully complete the diploma, students must:

  • Successfully complete all written and practical assessments.

  • Achieve a minimum of 100 supervised client hours.

  • Demonstrate ongoing professional and personal development.

  • Meet the required Fitness to Practise standards throughout the course.

  • Psychodynamic counselling training requires students to engage thoughtfully with feedback, reflect on their own experiences, and demonstrate an openness to personal growth. A willingness to reflect is therefore an essential requirement of the programme.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed a recognised Level 3 Counselling qualification.

As part of the application process, applicants will be invited to attend an interview to explore their readiness for professional training and their capacity for reflective practice.

We recognise that every student learns differently.

Where appropriate, assignments and assessments can be adapted to meet individual learning needs while maintaining the professional standards required of the qualification.

Our aim is to provide an inclusive and supportive learning environment in which every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Clinical Placement

Students will complete a supervised clinical placement during the course.

We will support you in securing a suitable placement and guide you throughout your clinical practice, helping you develop the confidence and competence needed to work safely with clients.
